How to Apply for Advanced Standing

Advanced Standing Step 1

Step 1: Login to myStudent Centre

Under the "Academics" section, click on the drop down menu and select "Transfer Credit Request".

When the next window appears, please select "Advanced Standing".

Step 2: Start your Application

Before starting your application make sure that you satisfy the requirements for Advanced Standing. You must also take into account the academic and financial implications of a successful Advanced Standing request. You will see the Advanced Standing application options available to you. These can include:

  • Courses from other institutions on your record that have already been evaluated;
  • Courses from other institutions on your record that require evaluation;
  • Courses currently not on your record that will require submitting an official transcript

Click “Start Application Process” to proceed.

Step 3: Adding evaluated courses

If adding a course that has already been evaluated to your Advanced Standing application, simply check the check box under the “Select” column to select the relevant course(s) and click “Next”.

If you are only adding evaulated courses, proceed to Step 14.

Step 4: Adding non-evaluated eligible courses

To add non-evaluated eligible courses check the check box under the “Select” column to select the course(s). You must provide a course outline, as well as the course code, course name, grade, semester/year taken, official grade on transcript and credit value.

If the course is older than five years, you must request a course exemption. To do so, click on the "Courses Older than 5 Years" tab and select the relevant course. You can also view which courses on your record are not eligible for Advanced Standing (click here for a screen shot)

Click “Next” to proceed.

Step 5: Adding non-evaluated eligible courses

You will need to specify if each course is a Core course or a Gen-Ed/ Breadth elective. Choose the appropriate option under the “Request Type column”.
You may only select one course at a time. If you select “Core” you will progress to the Program Map page see Step 6. If you select Gen-ed/ Breadth you will progress straight to the Course Outline page see Step 7.

Step 6: Indicate the Sheridan course covered by your Advanced Standing application

Next you will need to indicate which Sheridan course your application relates to. Check the check box under the “Select” column to select the course. Please note: The Program Map may not be completely up to date. To view an up to date version, view myAcademic Requirements in myStudent Centre.

Step 7: Attach Course Outline to your application

When applying for Advanced Standing for a non-evaluated course you must include a detailed course outline documenting the learning outcomes and the length of the external course. You can do this by either:

  • Providing the URL address of the official website where this information is posted
  • Copy and paste the course outline
  • Upload the course outline as a PDF or .DOC format.

Add your course outline then click "Next" to proceed.

Step 8: Add more courses or proceed to next stage

Once you have successfully added a course to your Advanced Standing application, the number of requests in your application will be displayed in the top right portion of your screen. From this page you can either add additional courses or click “Next” to proceed to the next stage.

If you are only adding courses currently on your Sheridan record, proceed to Step 14.

Step 9: Add courses not currently on your Sheridan record

You may apply for advanced standing for courses not currently on your record or for courses which require an updated transcript. You will need to provide course outlines and information and submit an official transcript to the Office of the Registrar. The courses will be validated once the official transcripts have been received and grades validated.

To begin select the school from the drop down menu and click “Next” to proceed to the next stage or click on the “Add School Not Listed” button.

Step 10: Add the school

You can add your school by checking the checkbox under the "Add School" column and clicking "Next" or, if your school is not on the list, clicking the "Add School Not Listed" button.

Step 11: Add the course

Once you've added your school, click the "Add Course" button to add a course currently not on your record.

Step 12: Enter the course details

Enter the information concerning the course you wish to add to your advanced standing application.

Please note: that Grade, Year Taken, Course Credits, Term and Course Title are mandatory fields. Your application can only be completed once the Office of the Registrar has received an official transcript.
Click "Add" to proceed.

Step 13: Specify the course type

Once you've added your course information, you must specify the request type (either for a core course or elective) from the drop down menu.

Click “Next” to proceed to the next stage.

Step 14: Review and submit application

Review the summary of your requests before submitting your application.

Click "Submit Application" to complete your application submission.

Advanced Standing Step 15

Step 15: Submission confirmation

A pop up panel will confirm that your application for advanced standing has been successfully submitted.

Click "OK" to dismiss the pop up.

Advanced Standing Step 16

Step 16: View past requests/ submit new request

Once you have added courses to your application for Advanced Standing you can review your requests or start a new application.

In myAcademic Requirements courses with Advanced Standing will have an "AS" designation in the grade field. (Click here for an example)
